I’ve grown up surrounded by animals my whole life, including dogs, cats, rabbits, ducks and chickens, so looking after animals has always felt very natural to me. Having so many different pets has given me lots of hands-on experience and taught me that every animal has its own personality, routine and way of communicating. I’m confident with the everyday responsibilities of pet care, including feeding, walking, playing, cleaning up after them and, most importantly, giving them plenty of love and attention. I love being outdoors and would make sure dogs in my care have lots of opportunities to get outside, explore and have fun. Depending on their age, personality and energy levels, I’d take them on walks through local parks and green spaces, let them have plenty of time to sniff and explore, and play games such as fetch or hide-and-seek with their favourite toys. For energetic dogs, I’d be happy to go on longer walks and adventures, while older or less active dogs could enjoy shorter, slower walks with plenty of time to explore at their own pace. I’d also love to create little games to keep them mentally stimulated. This could include hiding treats around the house or garden for them to find, practising tricks, using puzzle toys or creating simple treasure hunts. I think keeping animals mentally entertained is just as important as physical exercise, especially for pets that have lots of energy! For dogs who love playing, we could have games of fetch, tug-of-war or play with their favourite toys. If they’re more relaxed, I’m just as happy having cuddles on the sofa, giving them attention and keeping them company. I understand that sometimes pets simply want someone nearby so they don’t feel lonely while their owners are away. With cats, I’d make sure they get attention on their own terms. We could play with their favourite toys, have little treat hunts or spend time together relaxing. Having grown up with cats, I know some want constant attention while others prefer having their own space, so I would always follow their lead and make sure they feel comfortable. I also have experience caring for rabbits, ducks and chickens. I’m comfortable feeding them, refreshing their water, cleaning their living areas and spending time around them. For rabbits, I’d make sure they have safe opportunities to explore and play, as well as plenty of attention if they enjoy being handled. I’m also comfortable with the daily routines involved in caring for chickens and ducks. I’m very happy to follow any specific instructions owners leave for me, including feeding schedules, walking routines, favourite activities and house rules. I know how important routines can be for animals, particularly when their owners aren’t there, so I would try to keep their day as familiar as possible. Most importantly, I genuinely enjoy spending time with animals. Whether we’re going on an adventure outside, playing games, learning tricks, having a cuddle or simply keeping each other company, I’d make sure their time with me is safe, fun and full of attention. I would treat every animal I look after with the same patience, kindness and care that I have always given my own pets.
